Dog | Neutered Male | Est DOB: 6/22/2019
Yorkshire Terrier | Brown/Tan | Adoption Fee: $800
Age: 5 years
Weight: 4lbs
Meet Eugene! Or as I frequently call him: Teeny Eugenie! He was owner-surrendered to Minneapolis Animal Care & Control when his family reailzed they couldn’t afford to care for him. We pulled him from the shelter and have had several months of loving on him.
Eugene was underweight (3lbs) when we first took him in, so we worked to put some weight on him and 4lbs seems to be his sweet-spot. He is VERY treat/food-motivated, so will always try to sneak some extra snacks. He was also severely matted, so his new family will need to keep up with regular grooming appointments.
Eugene just had a dental cleaning, where he had 12 teeth extracted. He will need to continue with annual dental cleanings in his new home – small dogs accquire bacteria and dental calculus very quickly and need those cleanings to maintain their overall health.
Eugene is a marker. When he first joined us, he wanted to mark (pee) all over the house. Once he was neutered, it improved, but not 100%. I do keep a belly band on him when I can’t watch him closely. He KNOWS he should potty outside, because he does his business right away when we take potty breaks, but he still has a little part of his brain that wants to leave his scent in the house. 🙂
Eugene is also a barker. When he is excited, happy, wants something, etc he will bark. While it’s cute, it can also be aggravating. First thing in the morning, when he realizes I’m awake and knows the next steps are outside & breakfast, he starts yipping. I just want his new family to be okay with that. I do think he needs to go to a single family home vs an apartment or duplex, as not everyone appreciates a yippee dog.
The other important thing to know about Eugene is that he is velcro dog. He wants to be with me 24/7. He loves to be carried around. I work from home, and he spends nearly all day in a small dog bed next to my desk. In the evenings, he is right next to me on the couch. Even when I leave him alone with my menagerie of dogs and cats, he will bark and seek me out – he needs his person. He DOES NOT love car rides; he gets very anxious.
He has done great with my small dogs. He loves to wrestle with my 6lb chihuahua. I think he could adapt easily to other animals. He will try to steal food from anyone/everyone, so would not be great in a house with dogs who have resource-guarding issues. He has also co-existed great with my cats. He’s a bit intimidated by my larger cats, but could live alongside feline family members easily.
Net/net, here is what we’re looking for in Eugene’s new home: *someone who is home most of the day, *someone who can handle a small dog getting underfoot, *someone who won’t get irritated with his barking and possible urinating inside the house, *someone in a single-family house, *someone who will invest in his health with regular grooming and dental cleanings, *someone who will love this boy as much as his foster family does.
Eugene is neutered, microchipped, has had his core vaccines, tested heartworm negative, and is current on both flea/tick and heartworm prevention. If interested in meeting this sweet boy, please complete an adoption application on campkitten.com . Eugene is being fostered in ANDOVER.
